ANTEROGRADE OR RETROGRADE ENTEROSCOPY

The ANTEROGRADE OR RETROGRADE ENTEROSCOPY is a little invasive examination, that has the goal to evaluate the small intestine. For its performance, a flexible tool associated to an overtube is used.

It can be performed through an anterograde via, namely, through the mouth, when there’s the doubt about lesions or when a clinical indication suggests that the problem might be at the proximal part of the small intestine.

The examination takes an average of 1 hour to be completed, and might be performed in an outpatient character or with the hospitalized patient. In some situations, both examination ways are subsequently performed.

The patients that use antihypertensives medications must use them at the usual time and with a small amount of water. Diabetic patients that are currently using oral medications must not use them at the examination day. The insulin might be administered by half of its usual doses. In case of insulin’s use, it’ll have to be administered half of its usual doses. It’s not necessary to dismiss anticoagulants.

THE ANTEROGRADE OR RETROGRADE ENTEROSCOPY PRESENTS THE POSSIBILITY TO PERFORM DIAGNOSIS AND THERAPEUTICS. THERE ARE DIVERSE THERAPEUTIC POSSIBILITIES AND THEY INCLUDE: POLYPECTOMIES, MUCUSECTOMY, DILATATION OF STENOSIS, UTILIZATION OF ARGON PLASMA, AMONG OTHERS.

THE COMPLICATIONS ARE EXTREMELY RARE AND, WHEN THEY OCCUR, IT’S GENERALLY AN ABDOMINAL DISCOMFORT AND SMALL BLEEDINGS. BLEEDINGS AND PERFORATIONS ARE POSSIBLE EVENTS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE’S AN ASSOCIATED THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURE.

THE RESULT OF THE EXAMINATION MUST BE WITHDRAWN BY THE PATIENT OR THE RESPONSIBLE AT THE SCHEDULED DATE.
